I have sleep apnea.
Probably.
A doctor once told me I did, which I found a bit strange, being awake at the time. But it makes sense, I often times don't sleep soundly, wake up during the night, and snore like a hive of bees has nested in my chest.
Sleep apnea is a condition where you basically stop breathing during the night because your airway actually collapses onto itself, which is about as terrifying as it sounds. It causes poor sleep, daytime drowsiness, and snoring like you would not believe.
The snoring has been a bit of an issue. Partners of mine have complained about it, slept in the other room, and resorted to moderate to severe forms of violence in an effort to get me to stop snoring. And these are the people who actually care about me.
Those poor individuals who have been subjected to my snoring on planes, buses, and in hostel dorm rooms are people that I truly feel sorry for. Every time I stay in a hostel, I'm putting my life on the line. I've had more than my fair share of angry hostel roommates waiting to berate me or hit me with things in the morning because of the backhoe-like noises I was making. One person didn't know it was me, but was quite upset that there was someone upstairs using a circular saw all night. Sure, that makes sense. I try to avoid sleeping in hostels these days, not just because I'm now a grown-up, but because I simply don't want to be murdered during the night.
There are some treatments for sleep apnea, including the didgeridoo, or this apparent piece of Olympic wrestling equipment . One of the best is losing weight, which I have found helps. But it's kinda a slow process, as of yet there are no pills, but I'm sure they're working on it.
Recently, I wrote a series of blog posts for a website about sleep apnea tips, treatments, and experiences. Check them out here, where they even include a writer's credit and a picture (of me awake, luckily. Also, I'm the one in the middle. They're titled Adam Sweet, that should give it away). Although my listed age is a bit off, it will be true in the not-too-distant future.
This is the kind of writing I like doing, stuff that I have personal experience with, and that allows me to be a bit creative and dare I say, even slightly humorous in my writing. I found the opportunity to write those blog posts through elance.com, which is a great freelancer website, if a little complicated.
Let me know if any of you have problems with sleeping or sleep apnea, and check out the website where the blog posts are, there is some really good stuff there.
And God help you if you ever find yourself next to me on a long-haul flight.
I take sleeping pills.
